Texas Auto Insurance Fact Sheet

Texas Auto Insurance Requirements -The state of Texas mandates that all auto drivers and vehicle owners carry the following minimum amounts of coverage of auto insurance:
  • $20,000 for bodily injury or death of 1 person per accident
  • $40,000 for injury or death of 2 or more persons per accident
  • $15,000 for injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident.

All Texans are required to carry evidence of their insurance coverage in their auto at all times. Usually this is in the form of an identification card provided by your insurer, an insurance policy, and insurance binder, or a certificate of self-insurance.

Prevent Auto Theft! - Join the H.E.A.T. (Help End Auto Theft) program.  This Texas Auto registration program of the Texas Department of Public Safety was designed to help law enforcement officials identify stolen automobiles.  You are given 3 options:

1.)  Obtain a rear window decal that authorizes police officers to stop your car between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. statewide.

2.)  Obtain a yellow front window decal to help prevent the car from being driven illegally into Mexico.  Your car will be stopped between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. statewide.

3.)  You can also get a white front window decal which authorizes law enforcement to stop your vehicle any time it crosses the border into Mexico.

Highlights:   The Texas Department of Insurance website is not as well designed as other sites.  The main page lists a lot of news and the links that people may look for are on the left side.  There are only a few links, but they lead into subtopics.  For instance the company link breaks down into multiple links where one can research a company and get information on multiple companies.  The consumer help link allows one to file a complaint or get data on an agent.  The Fire Marshal link is different than other states websites in that there is a place to read up on arson investigations or call a hotline to report one.
