6 Must-Know Tips For Driving on Snow and Ice

riving in snow can be tricky and somewhat dangerous. This is why it is very important for you to be careful and cause some common tips that can make it easier and safer to drive on snow and ice. In this article, we will provide you with some tips to help you improve your snow driving skills.

 

  1. Defrost Your Windows/Get Unstuck. Make sure you turn on your defroster and fan on low to help you defrost your windshield and warm the interior of your car before you even take off. If you find that you’re stuck, dig yourself out with a light snow shovel but don’t try spinning your wheels out because this will simply cause you to be stuck even more. Instead place some salt underneath or a piece of rubber material underneath the stuck wheel so that you can drive out with ease.

 

  1. Maintain a Steady Speed. Always make sure that you drive at a steady speed. Do not accelerate because this can be dangerous and cause skidding. In fact, take your time and drive slowly so that you can avoid an accident if necessary.

 

  1. Avoid Heavy Snow. If the snow is steadily coming down then pull into a safe location and wait for it to stop or at least ease up a bit. This will allow the salt trucks to come out and place salt down to help it melt.

 

  1. Stopping on ice and snow takes time. Remember that it takes a lot longer to stop on snowy, ice-covered roads. Therefore, let cars go 5 cars ahead of you so that you can stop in case of an accident. This will allow you to see any potential problems and allow you to have a longer reaction time.

 

  1. Skidding. In contrast, if you’re in a front or rear wheel drive vehicle, first disengage the clutch or shift to neutral and steer into the skid. This will cause the vehicle to straighten out and stop skidding. Just before you come out of the skid, turn the wheel the other way until you are going in the right direction.

 

Finally, be very careful. When steering into a turn, make it gradual and as smooth as possible. You should also drive at a slow speed to avoid using the brake. If you skid, steer in the direction you want the car to go, usually opposite to the way you are skidding. If you skid while turning with the brakes applied, immediately remove your foot from the brake while continuing the turn and the skid will stop. You can then reapply the brakes as necessary. It’s important to remember that driving on snowy and ice-covered snow calls for deliberate steering!
