Lincoln
Celebrates 90th Anniversary of the Lincoln Highway
NEW YORK, Aug. 19 For all you vintage car
fans, there’s nothing that quite captures the romance of a bygone
era better than seeing a collection of classic and current Lincoln
vehicles on a cross country tour over a historic byway. From Aug. 17
- Sept. 1, owners of these historic cars will be among those
traveling from coast-to-coast to commemorate the 90th
anniversary of America's first transcontinental road, the Lincoln
Highway.
"The Lincoln Highway Cross Country Tour is a
once in a lifetime opportunity to see this remarkable piece of
American history in its entirety," said Bob Licty, chairman of
the Lincoln Highway Anniversary Tour. The tour was created as a way to commemorate the 90th
anniversary of the 3,300- plus mile road that spans 12 states from
New York to California. The
beginnings of the Highway date back to 1913 and was named after
former United States President Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln Highway
name fell into disuse as numbering systems replaced names of
highways as the number of highways proliferated across the country.
Lincoln will serve as an official sponsor for the
Lincoln Highway Anniversary Cross Country Tour. A Town Car will pace
the caravan of vehicles making the cross-country tour, and Lincoln
will provide two Navigators as support vehicles. Classic Lincolns
participating in the drive will include cars such as a 1937 Lincoln
K-series, a 1961 Continental and a 1964 Continental.
The tour kicked off in Times Square on Sunday, Aug.
17. It travels through
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa,
Nebraska, Wyoming, Nevada, and ends in San Francisco's Lincoln Park
on Sept.1.
